Our troop gathers to take a tour of part of the animal sanctuary.
We watched a video with adorable looking animals, since our walking tour did not cover the entire sanctuary.
As you ca see there is no info about the girls working with the animals. I need your help to document that. Please send your daughter’s story about the sanctuary and working with the animals to Julie A’s personal email address so I can post them. Thanks
Many thanks to everyone for filling out forms, to parents that drove and chaperoned, and to our leader Julie S!
Some members of our troop were able to join with other Girl Scouts, of all levels & ages, this past Saturday at Council. there were lots of rainy day projects; heat therapy rice bags for patients at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, blankets for Salt Lake International Refugee Center, and get well and thinking of you cards.
And to take home each girl made a Pine Cone bird feeder, and a friendship bracelet or two.
Our local service unit fundraiser, HUGS Family Bike Ride was a blast. If you missed it this year, we hope that you’ll be able to join in the fun next year. It was a wonderful family activity!
It almost felt like cookie booth time, as the girls set up a table at the Cottonwood Heights’ Safety Fair on 9/11/08. Girls had personally made fliers to place out, plus we had professional fliers donated. Our focus was animal/pet safety. We also told people how our troop was planning a trip to Best Friends Animal Shelter. We received lots of positive comments regarding what we were doing and that there was a Girl Scout presence at the Safety Fair.Time spent at the booth and the time it took for the girls to make fliers are hours that help achieve their Bronze Award.
Especially popular is the last one, Mall Slumber Party (You & Me) This particular activity an adult female must attend with the girl. Also note it’s in Layton.

Girl Scouts of Utah starts off the membership year with our council-wide recruitment service project “Give Back Utah”.Bring a friend and introduce them to the joys of Girl Scouting and service.
Last year we braved the rain to Give Back to Utah in a big way!Girl Scouts and their friends donated hundreds of cans of food to the Utah Food Bank; made and donated more than 40 animal cage quilts, pet food, and pounds of newspaper for cages at the Animal Services of Salt Lake; 30 baby blankets–all tied with love that were delivered to the YWCA.
We made 55 rice bags for the Huntsman Cancer Institute; 20 stuffed animals for Murray Police Victim’s Advocate Program; and more than 25 bird perches for the work of Hawk Watch in rehabilitating injured birds.
Join in the fun again this year and see what wonderful good your service does!

Girls that have not made a flier yet, passed fliers out, or missed planning meetings can take this opportunity to earn 1 service hour by make a flier based on the items below. Fliers can be hand drawn if done neatly. For these same girls lacking hours or any girl, this booth is an opportunity to earn 2 service hours.
PLEASE RESPOND if your daughter will make flier.
Our booth will focus on how to keep animals safe such as:
* Keeping dogs on Leashes for walks
* Making sure yard fences are completely enclosed
* Getting a chip placed in the pet incase they are every lost, the dog can be returned to it’s owner
* Update your phone/address with proper organizations when moving.
Along with this info, we will encourage our Bronze Award project issues:
* Spay/Neuter your cat/dogs
* Vaccinate your animals for prevention of disease
This booth is an excellent opportunity for the girls to earn hours for their Bronze Award and to get used to speaking with the public.
Girls must earn 15 hours of service to achieve the bronze award. (We expect to earn 4 hours of service at the Best Friend’s Animal Shelter in Kanab.)

WHAT GIRLS ARE WORKING ON
* Girls created posters at the meeting to collect dog/cat food & dog toys at their local schools & churches.
* Girls were instructed that they would need to ask the appropriate person at their church/school to ask for permission to do this.
So if your daughter takes 10 minutes talking with someone for approval they mark those 10 minutes in their log (in their Bronze packet.)
* Parents, do you have a large box that the girls could decorate/wrap in nice looking paper for the collection box?
What else can they do to earn service hours toward project?
*what ever they can think of that raises awareness of issues of dogs/pets etc.
Ideas:
* Hold yard sale to rasie money to purchase pet food for Best Friends. Make it know it is a fundraiser.
(Let me know if you want to do this, Maybe several girls could bring stuff and do it together.)
*Could ask local businesses to match what girls raise at the sale.
* Ask for permission/And write article for school or church newsletter to raise awareness of issues.
*Write letter (regarding issues) to local newspapers (Tribune or local papers.)
* Write letters to Senators, Congressmen, White house etc…
* Ask stores (Reams, Target, Smith’s, Albertoson’s, Walmart etc)….to donate dog food for use to give to Best Friends.
(Please let me know which store you and your daughter will go to so we don’t ask twice.)
*We plan to “Sew” blankets at a meeting for the BFAS dogs. This will also earn their sewing badge.
Do you have other ideas? Please let me know so I can share with the troop.
WE REALLY WOULD LIKE THE GIRLS TO TAKE THE LEAD on these things. It’s “Their” Award, It shouldn’t be us saying “you have to do this”
Please talk with them on these above ideas and see what they would like to do.
Have I forgotten something? Probably. But hopefully not. Send us an email or call anytime with your questions.
Also watch for the Funstuff Happening calendar to come in the mail. Look thru it for fun stuff for your daughter to participate in.
Things like Zoo Snooze and sleepover at the mall will fill up quickly and you will need to register for them quickly.
Plan on meetings everyFriday in September. 3:30pm-5:30pm
There will be a casual Family & daughter Pool/BBQ at Julie S’s home in September. Date TBA.
In an informal badge ceremony girls will receive their badges.
October we will take a break due to scheduling conflicts.
Unless….Are there any parents willing to lead a meeting or take the girls on hikes?
Our Kanab trip is in October. (UEA Weekend)
We will have a parent meeting in September to discuss the trip.
Also remember that each girl should try to pay a portion of the trip out of their own pocket. (As opposed to mom and dad paying the whole thing.) The exact amount is up to you and her. Doing extra chores around the house or a neighbor, selling lemonade as a fundraiser etc… are all good ways to earn extra money. (While this isn’t mandatory, it would be good for her.)
Working on the Bronze.
Hopefully your daughter hasn’t misplaced her Bronze award packet. Here is a link to it.
This article is for the girls that are doing the Bronze Award regarding animal abuses & mistreatment (Note girls do not have to do it and should only do it if they are committed to the project. Girls can also do something else on their own however they would need an adult mentor. Before starting a project on your own please speak with your leader.)
This Bronze award was discussed with parents and daughters at the parent/daughter meeting. Since then the girls talked this over further at Monday’s meeting (on 7/14). Below is a recap of the meeting and assignments.
Issues this project is addressing:
Animal Abuse (People miss treat animals)
Too Many Homeless Dogs and Cats
Why? There is an over population of these animals. We could decrease this if people were to Spay and Neuter their pets.
Puppy Mills
What are they? Large-scale dog breeding facilities that operate under substandard breeding.
Things to Remember:
Don’t loose the “Bronze Award Packet” (You/your parent received at the meeting.)
Give your Project a Name (Each girl may name it appropriately in regards to the service project.)
Project Time Line Log (In Bronze Packet): Keep track of hours spent.
Those that attended the meeting may log “1 hour ~ Planning Meeting”
Any things/time the girls do in relation to the project must be logged.
Assignments need to be completed by August 14th
Suggestion:Crate a time line to figure out what dates you can work on the assignments.
Service at Best Friends Animal shelter will only count as 3 possibly 4 hours
Assignments for the Girls
Parents can assist and at time may need to, but it is the girls who should be doing the effort.)
Research issues further. (Books, Internet with parents approval etc..)
Create Flyers regarding issues.
Tell people what they can do to help with these issues.
Hand out fliers (I.E. At Parades, family Friends, Church, hand out at back to school night etc..)
Post Fliers (See below.)
Work on one (1) “Sign” on your own (Badge Book)
Any sign is good. FYI: The “rainbow” relates best to the project.
Earn Pet Care Badge (If you have already earned it this one is complete.)
Read Through and become familiar with the “Bronze Award Packet” if you haven’t already.
Miscellaneous
In September when we start meeting again for troop meetings we will Earn the “Sew Simple Badge”
Other things girls will possibly do in the future
will be posters about issues (hung at schools)
Collection of dog food, cat liter, material for animal blankets etc… to take to Best Friends animal shelter or to the human society.
cutting and tie-ing “dog blankets” for animal shelters
Posting Fliers
Obey all posted signage prohibiting the posting of “bills.”
Ask where it is appropriate to post flyers at your school, church, community center, or government office.
Post flyers only where it is appropriate to do so. Do not post flyers on trees, telephone poles, cars, buildings, dogs, cats, or other creatures who would not appreciate it. These types of postings often become trash, and that is not what the Girl Scouts stand for.
Do carry your flyers into businesses, restaurants, coffee shops, and other popular gathering places, and ask if there is a place where you can leave some flyers, or post one for their patrons to read.
We would like to meet with the girls next Monday, July 14th to discuss the Bronze award. We will also talk about the trip to Best Friends. Girls should come prepared with their badge books and handbooks and Bronze worksheet that I gave them. A notebook would help as well. We will meet at the dinner hour as many girls are in camp during the day. I would like to meet with them between 5-8pm. I will make them hamburgers on the grill for dinner.
We will work on one of the signs and talk about the two badges that we need to do. One badge will be assigned for home and the other we will work on later, probably in Sept and early Oct. before the trip.
